plants versus animals

paths

a white puff of cottonwood seed
drifts into my open hand:
the air all a-flurry with them,
each full of purpose
but oh-so-random in the winds of their journey,

animals have more freedom to act on their will than plants do,
and we work on understanding animals enough
so that we might be where the elk walks and the eagle flies,
where wolves and grizzly and moose find paths
that might come close to ours,

even if who we hope for isn’t there,
time spent in nature is always good for the soul.
