a collateral wound of war
every child deserves to feel safe,
yet war can devastate such rightness,
in 1941, Pearl Harbor wracked the country,
followed by mass volunteering,
including a 33 year old Kentucky doctor
with a freshly 2 year old daughter,
her earliest memory is of being stunned
by his announcement that first Monday that he had enlisted,
how can a wound heal
when your father had to spend years away from you
in a dangerous world, far-removed
from the fun and comfort that should be your due?
her heart was broken,
and still is.
