keeping fit

early day on the A.T.

the Appalachian Trail called to us today,

and we hiked hard up and down,

and along the high ridge,

the effort up challenging the heart and lungs and legs,

the effort down challenging the knees

and the four of my balance,

the high country cool and dappled with light

when the sun won its way through burgeoning clouds,

our bodies need the world to keep us fit,

our souls need the work to keep us aware,

and appreciative of what’s beyond,

the smallness that can be how we perceive the world.
