Narcissus in Chief

led to be lesser

the alphabet allowed us to hold thoughts with words
in a way that democratized the written word,
allowing us to remember yesterdays
so that todays can prepare for tomorrows,
yet. . .
our primal impulses can deny such lessons
and can be like the child
who needs, but doesn’t want, the adult, the parent,
the one to help move past the terrible will
which only wants its own way,

our politics today are dominated by Narcissus,
in love with his own reflection,
and we in love with the denial
that we should think,
that we should remember,
that we should love the other,
even more than ourselves,

our species has evolved in culture
so that our tools allow us to become greater,
Narcissus and greed shout at us to be lesser.
